I want it all

Music: Kanye West "I want it all"

Pairing: http://qz.com/403628/autonomous-cars-will-destroy-millions-of-jobs-and-reshape-the-economy-by-2025/?utm_source=parWD

The new freestyle/song/whatever from Kanye West that he performed the other night at Anaheim's PowerHouse 2015 was quite timely. It's graduation season for those of you who don't know and "I want it all" is how a lot of kids are thinking these days. This is the time in many young people's lives when they feel like the whole world is at their fingertips - and hopefully it is. Ye rapped over the instrumental from his classic track "Heartless" stating, "everything I do that's not perfect only makes it that much more perfect." In my mind this means that we can't be afraid to fail. Being imperfect is the perfect way to be.

[cheesy transition] The future is HERE. The future is NOW. Imperfect is not how anyone would describe autonomous cars (if so, god help us all). With Google experimenting on driver-less cars for who knows how long, it seems that their deployment in the marketplace is nearer than we would have thought. It's hard to imagine the road being packed with autonomous cars by 2020, but I guess the iPhone blew up pretty fast too. You never know. I guess we'll see if all of these college grads (myself included) really do want it all...

Chance the Rapper and a Hijacked Airplane

Music: Chance The Rapper's Nostalgia

Pairing: Reddit user Ok3n's first hand account of the hijacked Ethiopian Airlines flight

You may or may not have heard of this story, about how the co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that was originally headed to Italy hijacked the plane and diverted it to Geneva in order to seek asylum. A lot of stories tend to get buried in the media moshpit and, aside from the fact that I learned the Swiss don't work overtime, many sources are reporting that the passengers were unaware of the hijacking.

Today's pairing tells us that wasn't particularly true and Ok3n gives a harrowing recollection of the various thoughts that pass through a man's head when your days are numbered.

"I held hands the whole way with my seat neighbor, a very nice, simple older Italian woman. Every single second of those 6 hours of uncertainty and soon-to-be death was a psychological torture. I broke down, let everything go, said goodbye, thought of my family, of moments in the past, of who will inherit my stuff and much more."

It's always good to be reminded that we're human and there's no better track to reminisce on the good ole days than Chance's Nostalgia. And here with some choice parting words is my homegirl Alice Morse Earle:

"Time waits for no man. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why they call it the present."*

*Full Disclaimer: I think that funky turtle from Kung-Fu Panda also used the same quote if this is sounding familiar to you guys, but that's Hollywood for ya, always jacking shit from somewhere else

Drunk In Love

Music:

Pairing:

This cover of Beyonce’s, “Drunk In Love” off of her self-titled album, demonstrates a darkness that most people skim over due to her general popularity and superstar status. The Weeknd’s cover of her song is appropriate given his often darker perspectives. Tshepo Mokoena’s article in The Guardian discusses the dark side of Beyonce’s song analyzing Jay-Z’s increasingly controversial line:

"I'm Ike, Turner, turn up / Baby no I don't play / Now eat the cake, Anna Mae / I said eat the cake, Anna Mae"

His line brings another level of meaning into a song that is seemingly lovey-dovey, with a reference to domestic abuse.

Enjoy today’s pairing. And as always keep on drankin that watermelonnnnn.
